Today America celebrates Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. Although we are not based in the US, shelter pets are a cause close to our hearts here at By This River.  With director Wendy having worked with rescue charity National Animal Welfare Trust for many years it was inevitable she and her family would choose to rehome a homeless animal rather than buy one when it came to a pet.  Our two office hounds, Toffee and Fizz, are both former strays from UK animal shelters.

Fizz was picked up by a dog warden in South Wales with a nasty gash on the top of her right leg. Now healed, we call it her “Harry-Potter” scar and if she’s a wizard at anything, then speed is her magic power. Fizz is faster than nearly every dog she meets and she loves to show them too. None of this is apparent in the office where she rarely leaves her bed, unless of course there’s a treat to be had.

Fizz was found and taken to Hope Rescue Centre in South Wales. She was placed in foster care whilst she recovered. The pictures on the left are Fizz after a week in foster care.

Toffee on the other hand is the exact opposite.

In fact if we were to describe Fizz and Toffee as characters, then C3PO and R2D2 from Star Wars would be about right. Like Fizz, C3P0 is very “prim and proper”, worries a lot and is extremely obedient. Toffee, like R2D2, is more cheeky, but friendly and always getting himself into trouble.

Toffee was found straying in the middle of a main road, with no collar or tag. Rehomed from NAWT’s Somerset Centre, Toffee displayed his confusion with the world very differently in those early months. His behaviour was best described as “yobbish” and he was extremely anxious whenever left on his own. Fizz has clearly helped him to settle and now his personality is beginning to shine through. He is very inquisitive and always wants to know what you are doing and what’s going on. He still doesn't like being left on his own much and he loves to chew anything and everything he’s allowed to, which is useful when it comes to office recycling as cardboard boxes are his favourite.

Ask anyone who has rescued an animal and they will tell you about the amazing bond you develop with them. Toffee and Fizz not only make a lovely addition to the family home but they make work-life more pleasant as well. They are very quiet but love to greet visitors, especially delivery men!

Sometimes when Wendy is on the phone, Toffee will let out the occasional bark, but honestly I think he is just trying to say hello to the person on the other end!

I’ve had an acute fear of dogs before working here but Toffee and Fizz soon changed my mind and now I love giving them fuss!

This blog is about two lucky rescue pets finding their forever home, but there are thousands out there still waiting for the same lucky break. The work of charities like NAWT and Hope Rescue is so important in helping homeless animals find their forever homes. If you are thinking about getting a pet, please consider adoption – it could be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
